Research Opportunities and Challenges in Analog/Mixed Signal VLSI Design - bringing conventional wisdom and fundamental concepts together
by Randall Geiger Professor, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Iowa State University
Challenges facing the researcher and engineer when conventional wisdom and fundamental concepts are at odds will be discussed. Research opportunities identified by recognizing these distinctions will be identified.
Five specific research initiatives emerging from these opportunities will be explored. One will focus on the design of bandgap voltage references where a new analytical formulation of bandgap reference design will be presented. A second will focus on current-mode filters where a comparison of classical filter design strategies will be made with the timely current-mode approach. A third will target high-gain amplifier design where amplifiers with right half-plane poles will be used for improving gain and accuracy of a feedback network. A fourth will concentrate on a popular current division principle where benefits and limitations of the approach will be discussed. The presentation will be concluded with a strategy for linearity testing of high-resolution data converters where the linearity of the test equipment is significantly poorer than that of the device under test.
QoS in Wireless Local Area Networks
by Morris Chang Associate Professor, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Iowa State University
The 802.11e standard is designed to be backward compatible with the 802.11. However, the newer devices' performance may be degraded because of the existence of legacy DCF users, and therefore would get a lower priority service. In this talk, we review the 802.11e standards and discuss different aspects of the legacy DCF and EDCA users coexistence and propose a simple distributed management scheme to mitigate the issues. Simulation results based on Opnet is also presented.
